Will Tyler Mahle play for the Texas Rangers this season?

ARLINGTON — Will Texas Rangers right-handed pitcher Tyler Mahle play in the majors again this season? It became a matter of time, as much as his health.

“We’ll see,” Mahle said Monday at Globe Life Field.

Mahle, 29, has made three starts this season since returning from Tommy John surgery but hasn’t pitched since Aug. 18. He was placed on the 15-day injured list on Aug. 20 with right shoulder tightness and hasn’t pitched from the mound since. He had a 4.97 ERA in 12 2/3 innings before his latest shutout.

The problem: The Rangers have just 26 days and 24 games left in the regular season, meaning time is running out for Mahle to return to major league action.

“I have no idea (what the timeline is),” said Mahle, who is in the first season of a two-year, deferred-payment contract. “I think that’s something you have to ask (the staff). I’m just playing football and seeing how I feel.”

Left-handed reliever Jacob Latz is back in the game, though. Latz threw a live session in the bullpen alongside starter Max Scherzer on Monday at Globe Life Field. The 28-year-old was placed on the 15-day injured list on Aug. 4 with left forearm tightness, which was caused by a nerve problem in his shoulder. He received a Botox injection to ease the irritation and pitched in two minor-league rehab games for Double-A Frisco in August.

Latz had a 3.71 ERA in 43 2/3 innings (46 games) for the Rangers this season and functioned as a leverage reliever in the first half of the season. He had a 3.28 ERA in 35 2/3 innings before the All-Star break but a 5.63 ERA in eight innings after it.

“It’s good that it’s nothing serious and that I can get back on the pitch,” Latz said. “I want to finish the season. I did some good things, but especially in the last month I had some difficult moments that I want to fix.”
