Will Jacob deGrom pitch for the Texas Rangers this weekend?

ARLINGTON — Jacob deGrom will start this Saturday. The plan is for Double-A Frisco vs. Wichita. But the two-time Cy Young Award winner said there’s a potential possibility he could make his season debut at Globe Life Field vs. the Los Angeles Angels later that day.

“It’s either Frisco or here,” deGrom said Monday. “That’s what we’re talking about.”

It depends on who you ask.

“Well,” Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said when asked if deGrom could play for the major league team on Saturday. “That’s always an option. I don’t think we’ll do it, but if something happens and we’re in a situation where we feel like we have to do it and Jacob is happy, then yes.”

The takeaway: Whether it’s this home series or another road trip against the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners, the right-handed pitcher’s return is imminent. He played his third minor-league rehab game Sunday at Triple-A Round Rock against Oklahoma City, throwing 2 2/3 innings and notching his second consecutive run without a hit. He expects to pitch four innings Saturday against Frisco or three against the Rangers.

The 36-year-old has a 1.35 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 6 2/3 minor league innings. He struck out 43 pitches Sunday, averaged 98.7 mph on his fastball and threw 18 sliders. He said his slider wasn’t “exactly where I wanted it to be,” although he was pleased to have the chance to throw outside the stretch and throw in a “stressful” situation with runners on second and third base.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to feel good, to be healthy throughout this whole process,” said deGrom, who is now nearly 15 months removed from season-ending elbow surgery last June. “I think at this point it’s just about (determining) what’s the best path forward, the most sensible path.”

He won’t be the only award-winning arm on the mound Saturday. Right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer will begin rehab for Triple-A Round Rock against the Las Vegas Aviators after a successful two-inning live session in the bullpen at Globe Life Field on Monday.

Here’s why the final month of the Texas Rangers season is so important for Max Scherzer

Scherzer has been sidelined since Aug. 2 with right shoulder fatigue, but has since identified a mechanical issue in his throwing that was causing the nerve pain. He has corrected his “arm action” and was able to throw more than 40 balls without pain Monday and hopes to throw about 50 on Saturday.

“I’ve made these types of changes before,” Scherzer said Monday. “I know how it ends, it just takes a little bit of time to adjust.”
