Who is available to Scottish free agent scouts?

Who is available to Scottish free agent scouts?

Kemar Roofe, Stuart Armstrong, John Fleck and Ryan Jack

From former Manchester United striker Anthony Martial to released Everton midfielders Dele Alli and Andre Gomez, and Netherlands striker Memphis Depay, a former Atletico Madrid player.

The transfer window closed on Friday but there is still a decent fantasy team to be built from the list of players who are still without a club this summer.

Those keen to follow the veterans’ path include Mats Hummels, who was released by Borussia Dortmund, fellow centre-back Sergio Ramos, who left Sevilla, former Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata, who left Vissel Kobe, and former Italy striker Mario Balotelli, who left Adana Demirspor.

Scottish Premiership clubs can only dream of landing such big names from the free agent list, but Rangers manager Philippe Clement and his Hibernian team-mate David Gray are just two players who have admitted they are considering bolstering their weakened squads with unemployed signings.

Former Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot, recently valued at £29.5m, tops the list on Transfermarkt.com but it is lower down – probably much lower – where most Scottish clubs will be looking for a bargain.

Of course, there is a quartet of Scottish internationals among them, while a few other intriguing names also emerge.

Is Brandon WilliamsThe 23-year-old left-back, who has just left Manchester United and was previously linked with Rangers, and the centre-back Filip Benkovicwho joined Celtic on a one-year loan from Leicester City and whose contract was terminated early by Udinese at the age of 27 following a loan spell at Trabzonspor.

And then there’s the 32-year-old Paul DummettThe former St Mirren loanee has been linked with Portsmouth after being released by Newcastle United.

So who could Premiership managers turn to to fill problematic positions among Scottish players or those who have recently played in Scotland’s top flight?

Goalie

The truth is there are not many experienced free agent goalies.

Mark Birighitti he is not simply without a club. The 33-year-old Australian has not pulled on competitive gloves since Dundee United’s 2-1 defeat to Livingston in May last year – not even during his emergency seven-day loan to Kilmarnock in January.

Right defender

English couple Jayden Richardson AND Liam Grimshaw were released by Aberdeen and Dundee United respectively.

Richardson failed to secure a place at Pittodrie and the 23-year-old spent last season on loan in League Two with Stockport County and Colchester United.

Grimshaw, 29, a former Motherwell player, made 40 appearances for Dundee United as they won the Scottish Championship but was released last month halfway through his two-year contract to allow him to find a new club.

Ryan Fredericks is likely to be in a similar price range to the Old Firm as both clubs have a wealth of right-backs, but the 31-year-old, who was released by Premier League club Bournemouth, was once mentioned as a candidate for a national team call-up because of his Scottish grandfather.

Left defender

Barry Douglas He faces his first summer without a club in 18 years, but has no intention of retiring after the 34-year-old former Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers player was sacked as Scotland goalkeeper after helping Lech Poznań finish fifth in the Ekstraklasa.

He is also leaving Poland Cameron Borthwick-Jackson after the fruitless loan of the 27-year-old Englishman from Śląsk Wrocław to Ross County.

Once famously bought by Liverpool from Falkirk, the 25-year-old Tony Gallacher He was released after two years at St Johnstone.

Central defender

Liam Cooper He appeared set to return to Hull City after being released by Championship rivals Leeds United, but the 33-year-old Scotland international defender has reportedly failed to reach an agreement despite making guest appearances for his hometown club.

Englishman Charles Dunne is looking for a new club after seven years in Scotland’s top flight – first with Motherwell and then St Mirren.

Like fellow countryman Dunne, the 33-year-old Calum the Butcher At Motherwell towards the end of last season he mostly sat on the bench.

Central midfielder

There are a number of talented players available in the midfield position, although most of them are in their thirties.

Stuart Armstrong He has been on trial at Brentford and has been linked with Premier League rivals Fulham and Italian clubs since being released by Southampton.

A 32-year-old colleague from Scotland Ryan Jack was recently spotted in the St Mirren stands following his departure from Rangers.

A year older, Jan Fleck is training again at the Ibrox club as the former Scotland midfielder seeks to prove he is fully fit after injury scuppered his short-term contract with Blackburn Rovers.

Emiliano Marcondes wages undoubtedly ruled out the possibility of a permanent stay despite the 29-year-old impressing during his loan spell at Hibernian, but the Dane admitted he would have preferred to remain in British football after being released by Bournemouth.

Scott Fraser He made just four appearances on loan at Heart of Midlothian but the 29-year-old Scot has been linked with a move to his hometown club Dundee after being released by Charlton Athletic.

Wingers

Connor McLennan He was seen as a promising player when he broke through to Aberdeen at a young age but struggled on loan at St Johnstone and the now 25-year-old was released after making a handful of appearances for League Two side Salford City.

After being loaned to Queen’s Park from Bayern Munich last season, the former Celtic youth player fell from favour Barry Hepburn He was sent to Leoben and struggled to perform in the Austrian second division before the 20-year-old was released by the German club.

The attackers

Fully functional Kemar Roofe He would certainly have a new club by now, but the 31-year-old Walsall-born Jamaican international has made just seven appearances for Rangers during another injury-hit season and will be looking for a fresh start outside Scotland.

Dapo Mebude has had no trouble seeking help since joining Watford in 2021, having been capped by Scotland Under-21s. He was one of five Rangers players cautioned by Scottish police for breaking COVID-19 lockdown rules.

The 23-year-old was sidelined for Belgian second-tier club Oostende before being sidelined in January following a car accident that required heart surgery, but has been training with Livingston recently.
