TDOT to meet Tuesday with company responsible for major Antioch water main break

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – South Nashville residents are concerned that a construction company could again damage their homes. It’s the same company that was responsible for a water main break on Nolensville Pike that displaced one family.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation plans to hold a private meeting with Civil Constructors, the company at fault, on Tuesday to discuss the incident and how to avoid similar situations in the future.

“I just don’t want my neighbors to lose even more value,” said Johnnie Luken, who has lived in the Hunters Branch neighborhood for more than two decades.

Her backyard overlooks Nolensville Pike, the same area where TDOT signed a contract with Civil Constructors to widen the busy road from two lanes to five.

Last week, she reported her concerns to WSMV4 after another company was found liable when a tree fell on a car and a shed.

A few days later, Civil Constructors will be responsible for a major water main break. It flooded Miguel Pena’s entire house and created a river in the area.

“How much can our neighbors take?” Luken asked. “Their nerves, they can’t take much more.”

In an email to WSMV4, TDOT said the contractor, in this case Civil Constructors, is responsible for damage to private property during construction. Officials will make sure neighbors are reimbursed for repairs.

“Today I can be mad about something, tomorrow I can fix it, and then something else can go wrong, so I guess we’ll just wait and see, you know?” said another neighbor, Arthur Kirkby.

As for Luken, she’s lucky she was far from the damage. But it’s the people in their community who want them to stay.

“I want the company to take care of my neighbors’ losses as quickly as possible,” Luken said.

WSMV4 contacted Civil Constructors but as it is a holiday we have not heard back. The extension is expected to be completed in 2027.
