Sister of hockey players who died the day before her wedding speaks out for the first time

Katie Gaudreau spoke publicly for the first time since her older brothers, NHL players Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Gaudreau, died in a bicycle accident on Aug. 29, the day before her wedding.

On September 2, Katie Gaudreau posted a series of photos on Instagram showing her with her brothers, family members, and fiancé, Devin Joyce.

The first photo in the slideshow is a family photo of siblings Kristen, Katie, Matthew, and Johnny Gaudreau, as well as their parents Guy and Jane Gaudreau.

“To know these two was to love these two. I have no words to express the bond my family shared. The whole world knows there would never be a John without Matty and there would never be a Matty without John. The absolute best big brothers a little girl could ask for. This will never be a goodbye post because I will never stop saying your names and honoring you both. I will take the best care of Mom, Dad, Kristen, Mer, Madeline and your children,” Katie Gaudreau wrote in the caption.

Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and Matthew Gaudreau, 29, were killed when they were hit by an allegedly drunk driver while riding their bicycles in their hometown in New Jersey, New Jersey State Police said, according to NBC Philadelphia.

They were to be best men at their sister’s wedding the following day in Philadelphia, according to the couple’s website The Knot.

Both brothers played for Boston College. Johnny Gaudreau was drafted by the Calgary Flames and finished his 11-season NHL career with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Matthew Gaudreau played five years of professional hockey, according to the United States Hockey League.

Matthew Gaudreau’s wife, Madeline Gaudreau, is expecting their first child, a boy named Tripp, according to a GoFundMe fundraiser launched after the accident.

Johnny Gaudreau had two children with his wife, Meredith Gaudreau. She posted a tribute to her husband and brother-in-law on August 31.

“Thank you for the best years of my life. Despite losing you, I am still the happiest girl in the world to have you. I love you so much. You were perfect. Sometimes it seemed too good to be true. I love every single thing about you. You are my forever and I can’t wait to be with you again. I love you so much, forever and ever,” Meredith Gaudreau wrote about her husband.
