Right quarterback among four ruled out of FSU football game on Labor Day

The Florida State Seminoles are gearing up for a key ACC matchup with Boston College on Labor Day. Coach Mike Norvell and his team will start their home game in Tallahassee shorthanded to avoid an 0-2 start.

According to a Florida State spokesman, at least four players will not be available when the contest against the Eagles begins. Redshirt senior offensive lineman Jeremiah Byers, redshirt sophomore linebacker Omar Graham Jr., redshirt sophomore linebacker Shawn Murphy and sophomore wide receiver Hykeem Williams have all been ruled out with various ailments.

The biggest blow to the Seminoles is the loss of Byers, who was listed as the lone starter at right tackle on the depth chart that was released earlier this week. Byers struggled at times in the Week 1 loss to Georgia Tech but earned significantly more playing time than reserve Robert Scott, a redshirt senior who has filled in at the position.

Scott has battled his own injuries the past two years and missed all of spring practice. Sophomore backup Jaylen Early and freshman backup Lucas Simmons are the names to know if Scott is sidelined at some point.

Graham Jr. started opposite senior DJ Lundy last week and did not record any stats in that loss. After scoring the second-most touchdowns among linebackers, Graham Jr. is unavailable, meaning senior Cam Riley, sophomore Blake Nichelson and sophomore Justin Cryer should see more action against Boston College.

Nichelson was one of the more promising defenders in a forgettable game, while Cryer failed to earn a defensive start despite a solid preseason. Riley totaled seven tackles in his debut with the Seminoles.

Williams and Murphy both missed last week’s contest and were the two players Norvell listed as limited earlier this week. There was hope Williams would return as early as tonight, but it looks like the team will hold him out until the end of the BYE week. Murphy seems to have some time to recover, judging by Norvell’s comments.

Without Williams, senior backup Ja’Khi Douglas, senior Malik Benson, freshman backup Jalen Brown, senior backup Kentron Poitier and senior backup Darion William were the only wide receivers to play in Week 0. It will be interesting to see if Norvell opens up play for backup Deuce Spann, true freshman Lawayne McCoy and true freshman Elijah Moore on Monday night.

The game between Florida State and Boston College is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. ET on Monday, September 2. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.
