Ravens host DL Lawrence Guy

Ravens host DL Lawrence Guy

Lawrence Guy spent the past seven seasons in New England, but he wasn’t among the many Patriots defenders who signed a new contract this offseason. But the veteran defensive lineman could soon find his place with one of his former teams.

Guy recently visited the Ravens, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The 34-year-old played in 43 games with Baltimore from 2014-16, making 17 starts during that span. Guy’s last deal with the Ravens was a two-year one; at the end of that, he secured a four-year deal with the Patriots. Another four-year deal followed, but he was released in a cost-cutting move with one year remaining.

Guy had no known visits before auditioning for the Ravens. The former seventh-round pick’s playing time in Baltimore overlapped entirely with Zach Orrwho is now the team’s defensive coordinator. Orr was promoted to the position Mike McDonaldreplacement this offseason, with 2024 being his first year as a coordinator at the college or NFL level. Guy will represent a familiar face on offense for Orr.

The Ravens carried over their entire defensive line from 2023 during the offseason, a unit that will once again be led by Justin Madubuike. The former third-round draft pick last year broke his previous career records in every category, earning the franchise tag and ultimately a contract extension worth $24.5 million per year. Michael Pierce, Travis Jones, Broderick Washington AND Brent Urban are also located along line D.

Guy has started all but seven of his 110 games with the Patriots, managing a steady workload along the way. The former seventh-round draft pick has been consistent against the run and has occasionally chipped in as a pass rusher. Guy’s best season in terms of sack production (4.5) came in his first full season with the Ravens. A move to Baltimore wouldn’t come with the expectation of repeating that performance, but it could allow him to establish himself as a depth player and prepare for another free-agent deal this spring.
