Police say 4 people died in Chicago-area train crash on Labor Day | WFAE 90.7

Four people were killed on a Chicago-area commuter train on Labor Day, police said.

Police were dispatched to the train station in Forest Park, a village 10 miles west of Chicago, around 5:30 a.m. after receiving a report that three people had been shot. Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, and one was taken to a hospital where he died, Forest Park police said.

Police said the train was traveling on the blue metro line and the shooting took place in two carriages.

The suspect initially fled the scene but was later located via Chicago Transit Authority surveillance footage. Police now have the individual in custody and have confiscated the firearms they possessed.

“It’s an isolated incident, so it could happen anywhere,” said Forest Park Police Deputy Chief Christopher Chin. “Obviously, there’s a little more concern because it’s on the mass transit system, but understand that there are safety measures in place, not only by our local police departments that run the line, but also by the CTA.”

Forest Park Mayor Rory Hoskins said the village fire department and police are often dispatched to the train station. He added that village officials have petitioned the state to allocate more resources to Forest Park for mental health and opioid addiction treatment.

“To the extent that our leaders in Springfield (Illinois) are considering any kind of reorganization of CTA mass transit, we would ask them to consider investing additional resources in terms of security, public safety, law enforcement officers, etc., to support a small community like Forest Park that has to respond to two major rail lines terminating in Forest Park,” he said.

Information about the victims has not yet been released.

Forest Park Police, Chicago Police, West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force and Chicago Transit Authority are working together to investigate the shooting.
