BOSTON – New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said Monday that starting wide receiver Javon Baker received an unspecified penalty after complaining during an Instagram live broadcast to a police officer who issued him a traffic ticket.

Baker informed his Instagram followers that he got the ticket on Sunday while driving someone to the airport.

“Some hating (expletive) cops in Massachusetts,” Baker said in the video, later adding, “Just because you’re a cop, it doesn’t mean a thing, bro. I pay you with my taxes. Come on, bro, you work for me.”

During Monday’s press conference, Mayo was asked about the social media post.

“Everything you just said is in no way a reflection of what the organization is, in no way a reflection of who we are as a team, or how Javon needs to come out and represent himself,” Mayo said. “We’ve addressed it internally. We’ve had a great conversation. I think it’s a combination of immaturity and understanding the grand scheme of things, that we’re here on a big stage and you can’t do things like that. As far as our relationship with law enforcement, I think it’s great. We’ll continue to strengthen that relationship going forward.”

Mayo was asked to explain the penalty but did not provide details other than to say it does not involve missing the team’s opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

“It’s a penalty, but not enough to take him out of the game. We didn’t see it that way,” Mayo said.
