Mob caught on camera taking over intersection in Iroquois neighborhood

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Late Saturday night tires squealed and smoke filled the air in the Iroquois neighborhood.

Half a block away, Kevin Cussek on Monday said the sounds was nothing new.

“Sounded like normal,” Cussek said. “They burn rubber and fly down the street all the time. They race up and down this road.”

But this time, the dangerous driving came with a mob of spectators.

Caught on video, you can see them taking over the intersection of New Cut Road and West Kenwood. Some taunted responding officers by jumping on the hood of a police car. No one was hurt, but the car was damaged.

And the video has families concerned.

“I mean, they were literally doing donuts in the intersection there,” nearby resident Eric Galey said. “The road was stopped, we heard people climbing on cars, on cop cars. So, now we’re just being concerned about our kids’ safety, about them accidentally running into a child going onto the sidewalk and running over someone.”

The intersection is one of the entrances to Iroquois Park and forms the corner occupied by the shops and restaurants of Colonial Gardens.

“Street racing is one more sign of how we have too few police and a lack of respect for safety and law enforcement,” owner Jeff Underwood said.

In the meantime, some parents said they are not taking any chances.

Shawna Burress decided to cancel her evening walks with her baby.

“If that’s going to be a normal thing, then, I don’t know,” Burress said. “I guess we got to cut that out of our routine.”

Iroquois was one of similar incidents across the city.

“(Sunday night) there were four arrests made, one citation issued,” LMPD spokesperson John Bradley said. “Three handguns and one rifle were confiscated as well as two cars.”
