The Pittsburgh Steelers will start the season with Russell Wilson at quarterback and Justin Fields as his backup. But it wouldn’t surprise anyone if Wilson got a short hook if he struggled.

If the Steelers had made the decision to hire Fields during the season, it likely would have had an impact on the locker room as well.

According to SI.com’s Albert Breer, “In this scenario, they’ll see what the offense looks like moving forward with Wilson. What if it doesn’t work out? Well, this is a roster that has already undergone changes at quarterback in back-to-back seasons, and a roster I’m told really likes and respects Fields.”

It’s not just Fields’ teammates who are pleased with the way he has handled the quarterback competition with Wilson and the approach he has taken this summer.

As Breer noted, “Fields has made some fundamental changes that the offensive coaches have given him (one of which was getting back to the type of footwork he used at Ohio State) and has really worked on them over the last few weeks of camp. That’s enough for some internal pressure to get Fields started.”

Both quarterbacks offer completely different options for the Steelers.

Wilson, 35, is far more experienced and polished, especially as a pocket quarterback, with a title and nine Pro Bowls under his belt. The question is whether he can still perform at a high level — his production in Denver has dropped off significantly over the past two seasons compared with his career in Seattle.

According to many NFL pundits, wins may not be a statistic for a quarterback, but it’s hard not to notice that Wilson, who had a positive record as a starter in each of his first nine seasons, has had a negative record in the last three.

On the other hand, Fields offers a ton of potential untapped potential, given his explosive ability to run the ball once he cracks the pocket. The question is whether he can process at a high level as a passer. He often holds the ball too long, leaving himself vulnerable to sacks and big hits.

The Steelers have two options at quarterback this season: The ideal scenario would be for Wilson to regain his form in Seattle and solidify his position, and the second-best option would be Fields, who would replace the struggling Wilson and prove he has the chops to be a franchise option in the future.

Of course, there is a third apocalyptic scenario — both players struggle, leaving the Steelers back to square one in the next offseason.

The team did well to change direction ahead of the 2024 campaign, giving itself options after the awful play at quarterback a year ago. But if neither Wilson nor Fields takes over at the position, it may be time for the team to get aggressive near the top of the draft to finally find the true franchise option they’ve lacked since Ben Roethlisberger retired.
