FDOT launches anti-littering campaign

FDOT launches anti-littering campaign

JACKSONVILLE, Florida. – The Florida Department of Transportation is shining a brighter light on a problem it says is not only unsightly but dangerous: littering.

In Northeast Florida, this is a big problem.

Duval County ranks near the top for litter on roads and highways.

Last year, FDOT collected more trash in Duval than in Broward County.

In September, FDOT will focus on drivers who may not be aware of the importance of securing their loads while driving on Jacksonville freeways.

People are also asked not to throw packaging, bottles and other rubbish out of windows.

It’s part of their “Less Waste, More Life” campaign.

Road crews can perform more extensive cleanup work, including blocking lanes on interstate highways to allow for safer debris removal.

The department can also work with law enforcement to “help remind people not to litter on the roads.”

FDOT encourages groups to participate in the Adopt-A-Highway program, which assigns them a section of roadway to keep clear.

LESS TRASH, MORE LIFE (from FDOT):

The Litter Less Live More campaign, launched in 2024 by District Two of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), aims to educate the public about safety and the impact of littering on the environment. Using community engagement and educational resources, the campaign seeks to encourage the public to recognize their role in keeping transportation safe and their responsibility to help keep our transportation corridors clean. If you are interested in volunteering to help with litter removal, contact the Adopt-A-Highway program at 1-800-BAN-LITT or 1-800-226-5488.
