Authorities have arrested and extradited a Kenyan man who allegedly killed his girlfriend in Boston, the FBI’s Boston office said Monday.

The office said Kevin Kangethe fled to Kenya to avoid prosecution after authorities found Margaret Mbitu’s body in a car outside Boston Logan International Airport.

“Our family has been notified by District Attorney Kevin Hayden’s office that the process of bringing justice to our beloved Maggie will continue tomorrow with the arraignment of the person charged with her murder,” Mbitu’s family said in a statement Monday. “We are deeply grateful to the District Attorney, investigators, police and victim advocates who supported our family and ensured that Maggie’s killer was held accountable.”

Mbitu’s body was found in a Logan parking lot in November 2023, authorities said. An investigation by Massachusetts State Police found Kangethe responsible for Mbitu’s murder. However, he fled to Nairobi days before law enforcement found Mbitu’s body, authorities said.

Kenyan authorities arrested Kangethe in January at the request of U.S. law enforcement, according to the FBI’s Boston office. Kangethe escaped custody but was re-arrested several days later.

The statement said several city and federal agencies worked with Kenyan law enforcement to arrest and extradite Kangethe. He is expected to be charged with murder and evading prosecution Tuesday in Suffolk Superior Court, the FBI in Boston said.

A representative for Kangethe could not be reached for comment.
