Dripping Springs, Wimberley ranked 1st

Dripping Springs, Wimberley ranked 1st

Our Class 6A Fab Five has a new high school volleyball team from Central Texas joining it, meaning one team has dropped down the rankings.

Likewise in 5A, where the newly minted Hendrickson fell in favor of the Austin school. In our last Fab Five, two teams swapped places.

Additionally, in the Texas Girls Coaches Association rankings, one Central Texas school fell from its position as the leader in its class, while another remained at the top of 4A.

Here are the top Austin-area high school volleyball teams of the week, including the top five classifications, a look at the state standings and the best matches we watched this week:

State election: Wimberly joins Dripping Springs in 1st place

Dripping Springs remains No. 1 in Class 6A, as the Tigers lost in the Volleypalooza final to Prestonwood Christian, the defending 6A private school champion and ranked No. 1 by MaxPreps. Austin High remains No. 4, as the Maroons are 28-2 on the season after losses to state-ranked Lamar Fulshear and national powerhouse Cornerstone Christian of San Antonio.

Wimberly returns to the top of Class 4A after winning the Johnson City Invitational for the second straight year. Liberty Hill and Georgetown both lost to strong Class 6A opponents at Volleypalooza, but the Panthers fell to only fourth place and the Eagles are eighth.

New teams in the poll are 2A Johnson City and 3A Thrall, both ranked 19th, while 4A teams Salado and Gateway College Prep are ranked in 4A, with the Eagles ranked sixth and the Gators eighth. Austin Anderson is ranked 17th in Class 5A, and Bowie is in the poll for the first time in four years, as the Lady Dawgs are ranked 20th in Class 6A.
