Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott in ‘active talks’ over new contract

Dak Prescott is entering the final year of his contract, but his focus has shifted to the field as the Dallas Cowboys prepare for a Week 1 clash with the Cleveland Browns in less than a week.

Prescott has done enough to prove he deserves a new contract, but Jerry Jones and company have once again shown no willingness to give it to him.

This is not to their advantage.

While NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the two sides are in “active talks” about a new contract that would make Prescott the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history, he has all the upside.

If the Cowboys don’t secure an offer sheet for Prescott by the time the 2024 season begins, he could become a free agent, and that would set off a bidding war for arguably the most high-profile free agent in league history.

“Both sides have been working, there have been active talks, for the last month or so, and the stakes are as high as they can get,” Rapoport said, as recorded by RJ Ochoa of Blogging the Boys. “If Prescott does get a deal done … which would obviously make him the highest-paid quarterback, player, anything in NFL history … he’ll stay with the Cowboys this season and beyond.

“If a trade doesn’t happen, he’s likely to become a free agent, the most high-profile free agent we’ve ever seen. He’s got all the influence and the clock is ticking.”

Last season, Prescott had one of the best seasons of his career. He threw for 4,516 yards, an NFL-leading 36 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. That effort earned Prescott a second-team All-Pro selection and a nod to the third Pro Bowl of his career.

He has proven to be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and now it’s only a matter of time before he’s making as much as him.

The only question is whether the Cowboys will be the team to pay him.

Dallas will open its 2024 campaign on Sunday, September 8 on the road against the Cleveland Browns. Tom Brady will make his commentary debut on FOX.
