Colts’ Samuel Womack III reveals his feelings after being fired:

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Samuel Womack III didn’t hide his emotions today while discussing his recent departure from the San Francisco 49ers.

Womack, 25, spent the first two years of his NFL career with the 49ers, appearing in 23 games with 554 snaps (216 on defense and 338 on special teams). Although his role has diminished in 2023, Womack still believes he performed well enough in the offseason to earn a spot on the 49ers roster out of camp:

“Last week was really hectic, especially for me. I really didn’t expect to get fired from the Niners, especially after having a good OTA, preseason and camp. But you know, business is business. Just coming here, I’m going to be the same player. I’m going to bring energy. I’m going to bring the culture, the winning culture from the Niners here. Cool guy, I’m going to bring good energy to the locker room and I’m going to talk on the field and we’re going to communicate, so (there’s) no gray areas on the field and we’re all going to play together.”

Womack, however, maintained his professionalism when it came to his former team. He went the introspective route in his comments on the situation, vowing that this was the last time he would be cut in his NFL career. “I’ll never get cut again,” he noted. “I’ll come in and work hard like I did and show the league why I am who I am.”

In addition to discussing his past and how he ended up with the Colts, Womack delved into other aspects of his game. He spoke highly of veteran cornerback Kenny Moore II, stating that Moore, K’Whaun Williams and Desmond King were the best slot corners in the game when he was in college. He was particularly impressed with Moore’s ability to “always be around the ball.”

Womack will have a chance to compete for snaps on defense for the Colts this season, given how thin the team is at the position, but his main draw will be on special teams. He has played on 338 special teams snaps over the past two seasons, recording 11 total tackles as a starter on four for the 49ers.

Womack is expected to fill a similar role in Indianapolis, with the vacant gunner spot alongside Ashton Dulin currently up for grabs. Womack should fit in well, giving him a strong roster spot with room to grow as a defensive player who sees legitimate plays on that end of the court.

Womack looks poised to be a starter for the Colts this season, and he can also play defense when the opportunity arises:

“I’m a press corner first – press corner, inside or outside. I’ll play as a man all day if you let me. But the press corner, I study the game a lot, especially being out of San Francisco – that was just a big part of the game. So knowing what’s coming week in and week out, I know that just by preparing myself and watching film and really just – I’m going to be around the ball. I’m a point guard. I mean, I know I have good technique and I stick with my coach, but it’s just something about the ball and just always
around it. I’ll just bring it.”

Samuel Womack III and the Indianapolis Colts will face the Houston Texans this weekend in the first week of the 2024 season. The young cornerback seems ready for what should be a fun season for both him and this team.
