It’s officially game week! The Seattle Seahawks are preparing to kick off the 2024 regular season with a Week 1 matchup against the Denver Broncos at Lumen Field on Sunday afternoon. It qualifies as a favorable matchup for the revamped Seahawks against a rebuilding Denver team.

We’ve identified three position groups where the Seahawks have an advantage over their opponent in Week 1.

Quarterback

Geno Smith returns for a third season as Seattle’s quarterback under offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, who is expected to give Smith more opportunities to make big plays in the passing game than previous offensive coordinator Shane Waldron did. The Seattle player has thrown 50 touchdowns over the past two seasons, giving coach Mike Macdonald an experience advantage at quarterback over the Broncos and their rookie quarterback, Bo Nix.

Wide receiver

The Seahawks are incredibly deep at wide receiver with a three-headed monster of DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Metcalf is a top-20 wideout in the league, Lockett is a reliable veteran and Smith-Njigba is a rising sophomore who should be more developed in Year 2. The Broncos’ receiving core took a hit when they traded Jerry Jeudy earlier this offseason. Courtland Sutton is the only experienced quarterback, and sophomore Marvin Mims Jr. is stepping into a larger role.

Corner defender

The Broncos have the best cornerback of the two squads in Pat Surtain II, but depth gives Seattle an advantage. Riq Woollen and Tre Brown will be the starters on the perimeter, and Devon Witherspoon will play the slot and other versatile roles if needed. Seattle’s defense should give Nix a hard time in his first career start.
