2025 NBA Draft Prospect Tre Johnson Impresses at Texas Workout

Tre JohnsonThe 2024 shooting guard prospect and a top-10 pick in the upcoming draft had stellar high school careers at two different schools — Lake Highlands (Texas) and Link Prep (Missouri). In announcing his commitment to the Texas Longhorns and Rodney Terry, Johnson joins a team loaded with high-profile transfer shooting guards, including Tramon Marek (Arkansas), Jordan Pope (Oregon State), Jayson Kent (Indiana State), Julian Larry (Indiana State) and Arthur Kaluma (Kansas State).

Even among those players, Johnson will emerge as a star, a player his teammates, despite his experience and pedigree, will defer to. A prolific scorer, he can score in a variety of ways and loves to create his own plays off the rebound. He’s a true three-point shooter with fantastic functional control, and while he lacks top-tier explosive athleticism, he’s still a capable athlete with size and underrated physical strength for his frame.

According to the source, Johnson, as a teenager, had already earned the respect of his Longhorns teammates as a gym rat and a guy who, as cliché as it sounds, would show up early and leave late to work on his game. He has a fantastic work ethic that carried over from high school to college, and he has avoided the sense of superiority that often plagues players with the level of hype surrounding them.

Looking at the Texas lineup, it looks like the perimeter scoring will be at its peak, and Johnson will be a big reason for that. The only real concern this year is that Rodney Terry’s offensive system puts big men on the elbows and runs a lot of high corner sets. That means there could be some spacing issues when it comes to Johnson’s mid-range game, but he’s such a talented shooter that the offense will likely take care of itself.

Overall, as a young player, Johnson will have no problem gaining a certain level of recognition from his teammates despite being a true newcomer to the Texans roster. His efficiency and scoring ability will be a reason why he is selected as a top-10 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
