Liberty Hill player, attacker Annie Witt

Faces off the field gives you a peek into the lives of Austin-area student-athletes. Today we feature Annie Witt, who helped Liberty Hill win the Class 5A state volleyball tournament last year.

All About Anna: Once an actress, always a volleyball player

Tell me something about yourself that most people don’t know.

In sixth grade, I was awarded best actress in the state for (Private School Interscholastic Association) One Act Play. I still love theater, but volleyball became everything to me.

If a caveman could live in modern times, what would impress him most?

I think he would be impressed with the lighter and HEB because you can easily start a fire without rubbing two sticks together and you can do all your grocery shopping in one place. No more hunting and gathering.

If you could go to any concert, who would you choose?

I would go see Michael Jackson. This summer, my mom and I saw Michael Jackson’s Cirque de Soleil show at Mandalay Bay in Vegas and it was awesome. His influence on world culture defines him as the “King of Pop.” I feel like I would have a blast seeing him live.

If you had to choose between being All-State in volleyball or valedictorian of your high school class, which would you choose?

Making All-State last year was a huge honor, and getting back to the state tournament two years in a row was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. And doing it with all my best friends was amazing.

Next stop: Angelo State volleyball team

Do you have any plans after graduation?

I am attending Angelo State University to continue my education but also to further my volleyball career. This school has met all my expectations. I am excited to play for a coach (Chuck Waddington) who has been there for 17 years and to play with a fantastic group of girls.

What is your favorite dish?

My favorite dish is the chicken fajita burrito from Jardin Corona. If you are ever in Liberty Hill, Jardin is a must-try.

Do you have any match day rituals?

On game days, I put my socks on the wrong feet. It sounds weird, but it’s always brought me luck. I also always do my hair the same way—two braids in a high bun. Coach (Marie) Bruce’s motto is “high ponytail, high standards,” so that stuck with me. You’ll never catch me with a low ponytail during a game.

What is your favorite memory from playing volleyball at Liberty Hill?

We go to the Glen Rose tournament every year during the preseason. Our sophomore year, we lived in a cabin at a church camp where there were bunk beds.

It was dark outside and we were playing a game called “Murder in the Dark”. One person is the killer and you try to kill everyone before the rest of the people find out who the killer is. It’s a game full of laughter and screaming and definitely brought our team closer together.

Dream Dinner: What Would Ferris Bueller Do?

If you could have dinner with four people from history, who would they be?

I would choose dinner with Katy Perry, Justin Herbert, Johnny Football and Ferris Bueller.

Justin Herbert?

I won’t lie, I’m in love with him. And on any given t-shirt theme day, I’m wearing a Justin Herbert t-shirt.
